About

Dr. Woodall is a fellowship-trained, board-certified neurosurgeon with particular expertise in surgical treatment of complex and challenging neurosurgical problems, including brain aneurysms, brain and spinal blood vessel malformations (AVMs), and difficult-to-reach tumors.

Dr. Woodall received his bachelor’s degree cum laude from the University of Georgia and his medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine, where he was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and was awarded the Physician’s Physician Award by his classmates. He then completed a seven-year neurological surgery training program at the Medical College of Georgia, including specialized training in endovascular techniques – the treatment of vascular diseases of the brain and spinal cord from inside the blood vessel.

He went on to complete an optional additional year of training in cerebrovascular and skull-base surgery at the world-renowned Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. He has authored multiple scholarly articles and book chapters and co-authored the third edition of Neurosurgery Board Review: Questions & Answers for Self-Assessment. His research interests include minimally invasive spinal surgery and microsurgical and endovascular treatment of vascular disorders of the central nervous system.

Dr. Woodall came to GNSCS in the summer of 2017 and serves as St. Mary’s medical director of neurosciences. He also is an associate clinical professor of neurosurgery at the Augusta University/UGA Medical Partnership in Athens. He lives in Athens with his wife and two young sons.

This was a first visit to Dr Woodall, and we couldn't have been more satisfied with him. He explained everything in a way we understood and allowed us the opportunity to ask all the questions we had. He has a great bedside manner and that goes a long way when feeling comfortable with a new Dr. when we got there, we were told it could be over an hour wait because he had called and said he was running way behind. We were asked if we would like to reschedule or wait it out. We have lots of Dr appointments and waiting was the best choice for us. I grew up with a sickly mom and sometimes spent up to 4 hours waiting on her Dr to come from the hospital. He was a true Gem and patience has become very familiar to me. It makes me slow down, enjoy the quietness. When I was young, my brother and I played a lot of tic tac toe and other paper games waiting the Dr office. we didn't have smart phones to play games, shop, look up things, read the news, text your friends, send emails, make other appointments, or sit there with your earbuds in and listen to a book or even read a book online. Now we have all those options plus the majority of offices have a TV to watch with clean wholesome shows without all the noise and vulgar language that we could be subject to walking out the door or pumping gas. So him being late was not a problem with me. Myb he was saving a life, needed an hour of rest, whatever it was did not deter us in any way. My mom's old dr was an anesthesiologist and only came into his office after 1 each day. If he had longer surgeries, it could be a long wait and a waiting room full of patients, but everyone there was willing to wait. On really long office visits we waited and waited and waited. He closed his office door at 8pm, but would stay as long as it to took to see his patients. It was an hour drive for us, but between God and him, my mom was able to live a little longer. And Dr Woodall gave me the same comfortable feeling that Dr. Payne did. So I would definitely have gladly waited on him all afternoon.

After a brief appointment that was the result of a referral, he remembered my situation and scheduled a followup test and appointment. I did not expect this, but I really appreciated it!

Dr Woodall is how every physician should be… He has an excellent bedside manner and does not rush out of the exam room. Dr. Woodall genuinely listens to your questions and gives you honest answers. He is, obviously a brain surgeon, but he has excellent communication skills and explains your condition with compassion and understanding without ‘going over your head,’ pun intended, lol.
